OUR BLOOM WOMEN HUB HEALTH SERIES 6.0 WAS A SUCCESS - THANK YOU!

Weight Loss With GLP-1s (Monjauro/ Ozempic) -What You Need to Know

ree

Bloom Women Hub Health Series 6.0 was a success.

Our guest speaker, Dr Gayatri Padmanaban, delivered an empowering and deeply insightful discussion on GLP-1 medications and weight loss.

Many women in the UK are familiar with the US brand names of these medications but are not always aware of their UK equivalents.

Dr Gayatri's presentation highlighted that:

Semaglutide is branded as Wegovy in the UK (commonly known as a Ozempic in the US), while Tirzepatide is branded as Mounjaro in the UK and US.

She also broke down this very complex topic with clarity, making it deeply relatable and easy to understand for many women in our community who have been quietly curious about these treatments. Her well-delivered presentation covered how these medications work and the key hormonal pathways involved.

Key insights from today:

  1. GLP-1s slow gastric emptying, mimic gut hormones, and have anti-diabetic effects.

  2. To qualify for GLP-1 treatment within the NHS, three conditions must ALL be met :

    1. A high BMI

    2. Being pre-diabetic

    3. Being at increased risk of cardiovascular disease

  3. The BMI criteria to qualify for treatment in the NHS differ for Black and ethnic minority women — an important and often overlooked detail.

  4. These injections can lead to up to 22% weight loss in some individuals, but not without possible side effects.

  5. Risks discussed included worsening diabetic retinopathy, mental health stress, and varied individual side effects..

  6. Women planning pregnancy were advised to stop treatment at least 2 months before conceiving, based on available data. Use of these medications is also contraindicated in breastfeeding mums. Post-menopausal women may experience unexpected bleeding.

  7. Due to the many possible side-effects and complications associated with these medications; Dr Gayatri advised that they should be taken under medical supevision.

  8. Dr Gayatri's parting words were"prioritise health gain over weight loss" through cultivating daily beneficial habits including exercise, strength training, calorie-deficits. This was deeply appreciated by our community.

Why GLP-1 medications are not considered "magic pills" .

It was an honest, balanced conversation — free of judgment, full of knowledge.
